Finish Work for a Lake Town
Wayzata was platted in 1854 by Oscar E. Garrison on the northern shore of Lake Minnetonka and incorporated as a village in 1883. It sits about 9 miles west of Minneapolis. For concrete contractors, Wayzata projects often lean toward appearance as much as function: stamped patios facing the lake, entry steps that suit a large home, and walks and driveways that match the look of the property.
Decorative concrete that holds up
Stamped concrete is the most common upgrade we discuss here. It gives the look of stone, slate or brick in a single poured slab, with fewer joints for weeds to grow through. A few things make it last in a Minnesota lake town:
- Air entrainment: the concrete itself needs entrained air to survive freeze and thaw
- Release and sealer: a good sealer brings out color and protects the surface; resealing every few years keeps it that way
- Texture: wet feet coming up from the lake need grip, so we choose patterns and sealers that are not slick
- Joints: even stamped slabs need control joints, hidden in the pattern where possible
For entry steps and landings, we often combine a stamped or colored finish on the treads with a clean broom finish for traction.
The lake sets the calendar
Lake Minnetonka covers 14,528 acres with about 125 miles of shoreline. Its median ice-out date is April 14, with records ranging from March 11 in 1878 to May 8 in 1856, and winter ice typically runs 12 to 18 inches thick. Ice-out is a decent signal for when lakeshore ground starts to thaw. Lakeside patios and steps usually get scheduled once the ground is workable and dry enough to compact a base.
An older, smaller town
Wayzata had 4,434 residents in 2020, up from 3,688 in 2010, and a median age of 52.7. The town counted 2,496 housing units. Its history runs deep: the Ferndale shore became home to grand country estates built by families including the Pillsburys and Washburns, and the Great Northern depot near downtown opened in 1906.
On older properties, we are careful about scale and fit. New steps should match the doorway and the house. A walk to the lake should follow the land rather than fight it.

Permits and lake rules
Lake properties often have shoreland rules on how much of a lot can be hard surface. We check with the City of Wayzata on what applies to your property before designing a large patio or driveway.
Driveways that suit the house
For driveways on larger Wayzata properties, plain gray concrete is not the only option. A colored mix, a stamped border along the edges or a different finish at the entry can tie the driveway to a stamped patio or walk. We keep the main driving surface practical and slip-resistant, and put the decorative work where it shows. For a driveway that has only scaled on the surface, replacement is usually the lasting fix, since thin overlays tend to struggle with freeze and thaw and plow damage.

Wayzata Questions
Will a stamped patio by the lake be slippery?
It can be if the wrong sealer is used. We choose patterns with texture and can add a grit additive to the sealer so wet feet have grip.
When can you pour a lakeside patio in Wayzata?
Once the ground has thawed and dried enough to compact a base, usually after the lake's ice is out in spring, and through fall while nights stay warm enough to cure.
How often does stamped concrete need resealing?
Every few years is typical in this climate. Resealing restores color and protects the surface from water and salt.
