Concrete for Homes People Keep
Shorewood homeowners tend to stay put, and that changes what they ask concrete contractors for. QuickFacts for 2020 to 2024 puts owner occupancy at 93.2 percent, and 92.0 percent of residents were at the same address a year before. When people plan to live somewhere for decades, they want a driveway, patio or set of steps built to last, not a quick patch.
A south-shore city
Shorewood split off from Excelsior Township in 1956, largely so neighboring towns could not annex it. The city curves along Lake Minnetonka's south shore, Highway 7 is its main road, and its limits include Spray Island, Shady Island and part of Enchanted Island. The 2020 census counted 7,783 residents and 3,023 housing units, up from 2,599 units in 2000.
That mix gives us a wide range of properties: lakefront homes with yards sloping to the water, wooded lots set back from the highway and newer homes on infill sites.
Driveways on wooded and sloped lots
Many Shorewood driveways are long, curve through trees or climb from the road. They need:
- Proper pitch to carry water off without creating an icy slope in winter
- A solid base where the drive crosses low or soft ground
- Control joints laid out to follow curves so cracks stay where we want them
- Root awareness near mature trees, so we do not undermine the tree or the slab
Where a long driveway has failed in only a few places, section replacement can make sense. Where the whole surface is scaled or the base has failed in many spots, we recommend full replacement.
Lake-facing patios and steps
For lakefront homes, the patio usually faces the water and the yard drops toward the shore. We plan patio elevation so water runs to lawn or plantings, not the house or straight into the lake, and pour steps with even risers and landings where the slope is long. Stamped concrete is a popular finish, with a textured sealer for wet feet.
Lake Minnetonka's median ice-out is April 14, and winter ice runs 12 to 18 inches thick. Lakeshore ground stays frozen and wet longer in spring, so lakeside work usually starts once things dry out.
Garage floors and outbuildings
We also replace cracked garage floors, pour slabs for sheds and boat storage, and repair individual steps, walks and driveway panels. An established population, with a 2020 median age of 46.7, means steps and walks with safe, even risers and good traction matter on many of these properties.
Permits
We check with the City of Shorewood on any permit or hard-surface rule that applies before work begins, especially for lake lots, where the amount of paved surface is often limited.
Island and shoreline access
Some Shorewood property is hard to reach. Wikipedia notes that Spray, Shady and part of Enchanted Island lie inside the city but get mail, fire protection and schools from Mound. Island and shoreline lots can mean narrow roads, limited parking for a concrete truck and long carries to the back of the property. We plan access first: where the truck can stand, whether to pump, and how to protect lawns and plantings along the route. That planning goes into the written price.

Shorewood Questions
Our Shorewood driveway is long and only partly cracked. Do we have to replace all of it?
Not always. If the base is sound and the damage is limited to a few panels, we can replace those sections. If the surface is scaled throughout or the base has failed in many places, full replacement is the better value.
Can you pour a patio that steps down toward the lake?
Yes. We set the patio level for drainage and add steps with landings down the slope, with a textured finish for grip.
When can lakeside concrete work start in spring?
When the ground has thawed and dried enough to compact a base. Shoreline ground often stays wet longer than inland lots, so we check the site and set dates once a firm base can be built.
